Hearing Amplifiers

Some extremely useful devices on the market today are hearing amplifiers and voice recognition software. These items can both add convenience to our lives and increase our ability to be productive.

In a very literal sense, these things can change the way we interact with computers, other people, and many entertainment devices. Most people have associated voice recognition software with the kind of programs you would only see on sci-fi television shows. They usually don’t believe that it actually works well in the real world.

Our current level of technology, however, has created an environment where voice recognition software and related application work well and are, without a doubt, extremely useful.A voice recognition service will let you interact with a computer inputting text or using different voice commands. That means you can create documents, send emails, and generate reports without having to type a single word.

This software is perfect for anyone that does a lot of dictation or otherwise repetitive tasks. It can also be useful for people with various disabilities that still need to interact their computers. You should expect high quality results from your voice recognition software, and as much accuracy as possible. There are software packages out there that include multiple specialty vocabularies (legal, medical, etc) which could be useful for dictation purposes and some that allow you to create custom commands to automate various tasks. Many people use hearing amplifiers for the same reason they use voice recognition software – to make their daily activities easier or more productive.

Hearing amplifiers, though, are generally used by people that suffer from some kind of hearing impairment. (Actual hearing loss should be diagnosed and treated by a qualified doctor.)There are a lot of uses for a hearing amplifier, and there are millions of people around the world currently experiencing hearing troubles every day. They could easily use these devices to amplify the relevant sounds around them and reduce a lot of the ambient and environmental sounds that make important things difficult to hear.

The best thing about hearing amplifiers is that it will allow people to start interacting with things the way they used to. They won’t have to turn up the television volume and disturb everyone else in the home, and they won’t have to expect everyone to shout or raise their voices just to be heard.

Also, when they are in crowded situations, the hearing amplifiers can block out much of the ambient noise that causes so many of the problems.Whether you are using hearing amplifiers or voice recognition software to increase your abilities, modern technology has made it possible to acquire these devices for a reasonable price. This means they will be able to live the life they have always wanted.

The World can be very difficult for the hearing or otherwise impaired. Thank heaven that there are places that make things like voice recognition and hearing amplifiers. Absent of tools such as these, the impaired would have it much worse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has anyone bought a TV hard of hearing amplifier for use with headphones?
I wish to either buy or make a TV hard of hearing amplifier. One that you place under or near the TV and connect a pair of headphones so the volume is not too loud for people in the same room. I gave one away that I bought at Radio Shack but as far as I know they are no longer trading in the U.K.

    • ANSWER:
First, there’s nothing digital about an antenna. They are all analog devices.

An amplifier attempts to increase the strength of the signal coming from the antenna. However, there are a few caveats.

      – Amplifiers boost both signal and noise, so there won’t be any improvement in the signal to noise ratio, a critical signal quality measure.

      – Amplifiers inject some noise of their own. The best amplifiers, actually they are pre-amplifiers, have a noise figure of about 2 dB. These can be expensive, – or more. Don’t expect the amp in a set of rabbit ears to be high quality.

      – The are two places that an amp can be useful. One is for far fringe reception, where the signal level from the antenna is so low that the tuner can’t detect it. In that case, the amp may raise it enough for the tuner to get a lock. But it will have to be a very good tuner to pick the signal out of the noise.

The second use for an amp is to raise signal level enough to allow distribution within your house to compensate for losses in the coax and any splitters you might be using. If your coax feed is over 50 feet, you may want to use an amp.

Just for the record, I’m pulling in very reliable digital TV signals from 40 miles away with an attic-mounted antenna (Winegard 7696) without a preamplifier. Coax feed length is about 30 feet.
